Tonight, I joined my friend Andrea for a family photo shoot. Andrea is a great photographer and has been thinking about getting an assistant. Photography has been a growing passion of mine. I realized with my own wedding pictures that I could do everything my photographer could do. So I started to shoot weddings with my friend Casey as her assistant. I have also taken pictures at friends weddings and made them CD's as gifts. That's a perfect gift. Who doesn't like pictures of their own wedding? :)
After we moved to Williamston, I upgraded to a DSLR camera and have enjoying the added features and speed that a SLR camera has to offer. I'm still learning the ins and outs of editing and lighting, but think I want to continue to pursue this as a side job. I think it's a great outlet, and I can work it around Eden's schedule. Now, I want to upgrade to a nicer lens and flash. This is an expensive hobby!!
Weddings and family photography are so different. As an assistant for weddings it's all about capturing the details. Great shots of the dress, lace, shoes, flowers, rings and programs are easily posed and captured and can be done as needed. The additional shots are of the guest having fun. You try to stand back and capture moments as they happen. You also get shots of the wedding, but that happens so fast it's over before you know it. You only get one shot at weddings.
Photographing families is much less stressful. The couple tonight was so nice. Their little boy was lots of fun. Easy smiles came with lots of energy, so posing had to be directed but also had to go with moods and energy levels. Overall, I think I would like the personal interaction that you develop with family photography.
For now, I love the idea of being an assistant. I don't have the pressure of being the pro, but I get to have fun and continue learning. Plus I couldn't lay on my big baby belly like Andrea did in the shot above if I had to. Just the thought makes me laugh.
Anyways, I love the pictures above and wanted to share what's rattling around in my mind.
Andrea, Thanks for asking me to join along. I really enjoy learning and look forward to working with you in the future.
